I'm not overly impressed with the Subaru dealer I took the Legacy to *Update*

I was hoping to have a loaner car to do an AMA about, and also to drive to and from work in, but they didn’t have one. This is especially irritating, since I was told they would have a loaner available for me. The service advisor, who wasn’t even ready to see me when my appointment was, reluctantly got me a ride in their courtesy car. Their driver was apparently brand new, and not very good....it’s a 10 minute drive to my work, and he almost got in two accidents. So yeah. Hopefully they treat my car well, I don’t want to get it back with a creaky dashboard, but I’m kinda worried...

Worth nothing: I’m young, so I wasn’t expecting brilliant treatment, but it’s still disappointing to get treated like a nuisance when I’m bringing my car in so they can replace a potentially deadly airbag.

Edit* I’m now even less impressed, although it’s not quite their fault. While they were doing the recall that involves reprogramming the PCM, the tablet froze and wiped the PCM. So now my car doesn’t do anything. They at least started off with saying I wouldn’t be charged for anything, including a loaner car for as long as it takes them to get me a new computer. So now I’m a weird mix of annoyed that they killed my PCM, but appreciating the suddenly quite good customer service.

As the former owner of three Subarus, I can tell you that creaky interiors is a Subaru thing. Because of this, the dash also probably won’t be cracked in thirty years.

Mine doesnt. They have one shuttle driver who works for like 6 of the dealers in the chain...

That’s disappointing....I guess mine is low enough miles that nothing creaks yet. So then I hope I don’t wind up with premature creaking.

That kinda sucks. I had an extraordinary situation with a Mazda dealer once. They had no loaners while my rx8 was in the shop, but the salesman arranged a 3 day “test drive” of a 5 for us. We told him we were interested in the 5 but we’re not going to be able to buy in the foreseeable future. He did it anyway. My wife and I agreed that this guy would get our next new car purchase. Unfortunately the dealership closed before that could happen.

I’m 19 and have gotten loaners on two occasions. First was a 2016 Hyundai Santa Fe and the second was a fully loaded 2016 Outback. Guess it’s all about going to the right dealer.

Make sure if you need a loaner that you try to reserve one in advance. For my Merc I would explain when I first called that I needed a loaner and they would tell me if one was available or if not when it would be.

That’s what I did. When I made my appointment, I made sure they’d have a loaner for me, and told them I wouldn’t be able to get to work otherwise. Whoever made my appointment apparently forgot to make a note on my file that I needed a loaner.

The Jag dealer I used to work for had excellent customer service, but that was because many of the customers were well past the millionaire mark. We also had a V6 F-Type loaner. Which is neat.

Ok, CVTs are terrible. But on the CVT spectrum the updated Subaru ones are pretty damn good. I prefer them to traditional autos.

That being said, I bought a 6MT Outback.

NO! The ‘15 Forester I was driving was so sluggish and unresponsive. I love the regular autos in comparison.

Yeah, it is fairly decent car. Much nicer to drive than the CVT Forester, but has nothing on the 3.6R Outback I was driving before that.

I test drove a 2016 Crosstrek CVT thinking I’d order a 5MT one. I found it to be down right adequate for driving around town. Far better than my mom’s 2012 Outback CVT for sure. Immediately after that, I drove the only manual they had on the lot apart from one WRX...the base spec 2014 Outback that’s now parked in my driveway sitting on General Grabber AT2s.

Other CVTs I’ve driven include, but are not limited to:
Nissan Versa, Rogue
Toyota Corolla

CVT’s are still awful. But the current Subaru unit is relatively very good. Modern traditional autos, IMO, all hunt for gears and are too eager to upshift.

The same way my Outback is relatively good offroad. It’s no Tacoma TRD OR, but it’ll leave any other crossover/wagon/tallcar in its dust.

It happens. Computers crash. Phones crash. Tech crashes. If it happens in the middle of programming there’s nothing you can do about it. Could be as simple as losing sufficient internet bandwidth. Most likely not the tech’s fault. It’s happened to most guys I know, including myself (but I’m obviously a total hack so no surprise there!). It totally sucks when it happens. But look on the bright side, you get a new computer out of the deal!

Now that I’ve had more time to think logically, I really can’t blame them for the computer problems. They’re handling it very well and gave me a brand new loaner car, so I’d say I’m happy

The Envision is Buick’s Chinese market model that they brought over here so it is not available as any other GM brand.
